Professor Walid Phares has been appointed as a Co-Secretary General of the Trans Atlantic Parliamentary Group on Jihadi Counter Terrorism in 2008.
Affiliations He is an academic advisor to the Anti-Terrorism Caucus in the US House of Representatives since 2008. He serves as a Senior Fellow and a Director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington and a Visiting Scholar at the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels. He has served as an academic advisor of the Coalition for the Defense of Human Rights in the Muslim world from 1993 to 2007.
Publishing Professor Phares is the author of ten books on international terrorism and the Middle East. His latest book, The Confrontation: Winning the War against Future Jihad, was published in March, 2008 and the paperback edition in March 2009. His previous work, War of Ideas: Jihadism Against Democracy, was published April, 2007 and the paperback edition in 2008. His book, Future Jihad, Terrorist Strategies Against America, published in 2005, has been listed on Foreign Affairs’ best selling titles for three months. The paperback international edition Future Jihad, Terrorist Strategies against the West was published in 2006 and was also translated in Spanish and Slavic languages. Since 1979 Phares had published several books in English, Arabic, French and Spanish on conflicts in the Middle East, Lebanon and the Iranian Islamic Revolution. He has authored many scholarly articles to Periodicals and Journals including Global Affairs, Middle East Quarterly, International Journal of Security Studies, Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, as well as German, French and Arab defense and security publications. In addition Professor Phares writes frequently for many newspapers, publications and sites in the US, Europe, Latin America, the Arab world and South Asia.
Media As of 2007 Professor Phares serves as a Fox News Channel Terrorism and Middle East Affairs Contributor. He was a Terrorism Analyst with NBC and MSNBC as of 2003. A fluent English, French, and Arabic speaker, he has been is a frequent guest on many networks including CNN, NBC, the BBC, Russia Today TV, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CTV, Global TV, France 24, Pakistan Dawn TV, al-Jazeera, al Hurra, al-Arabiya, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi TV, Nile TV and many other networks around the world. Professor Phares appears on several syndicated radio shows and many radio broadcast in the US and worldwide.
International recognized expertise A frequently consulted expert, for more than two decades Dr. Phares has been called upon by European Commissioners, European Parliament members, as well as French, British, Belgian, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Cypriot legislators, officials and Diplomats. He has served as an expert for the Dutch Government on Terrorism. He has also testified to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on the Middle East and South East Asia, the House committees on international relations and Homeland Security and regularly conducts congressional, State Department, Department of Defense, and Department of Justice briefings.

Teaching appointments Dr. Phares teaches Global Strategies at the National Defense University’s School for National Security Executive Education (SNSEE). From 1993 to 2006, Dr. Phares was a professor of Middle East Studies at Florida Atlantic University. He has also taught courses at Florida International University, the University of Miami and l’Universite Saint Joseph in Beirut. Professor Phares courses include: Middle East history and politics, global terrorist movements and ideologies, and democratization and human rights.
Education He holds degrees in law and political science from Saint Joseph and the Lebanese Universities in Beirut, a Masters in international law from the Universite de Lyons in France, and a Ph.D. in international relations and strategic studies from the University of Miami.
